Midwife ~
Your guide and companion on this challenging and miraculous journey.
To Women and Their Families ~
Welcome to a most profound, intense time of change and growth in your life. You will not really know what I mean by these words until you have gone through the experience of your gestation, birth and becoming parents. You will be a different person than when you started on this journey.
Remember to trust the Wise Woman or Man within yourselves. Encoded in our DNA is the knowledge we need in order to give birth joyfully. Learn from Nature by spending time outdoors observing her cycles and processes. Your brothers and sisters, the plants and animals will teach you. You are part of the Divine Mystery of Life and have the privelege and ability to draw upon its wisdom and resources. Come, join in the sacred eternal dance of creation, life and death.
I would be honored to dance with you.
About Helena~
Helena Wu has been attending homebirths since November 1990 in the southwestern Vermont area. She trained by apprenticing with different midwives and is now a CPM (Certified Professional Midwife) licensed in the state of Vermont (LM). She is also an Herbalist and owner of Happy Heart Herbals, providing health consultations, herbal education, personal healing retreats and products.
Her grandparents, parents, uncles and aunts were all born at home with midwives back in China and Hong Kong. The youngest of her three grown up children was born at home before the doctor arrived! Preserving the right of women to birth in the sanctity of their own homes is important to her.

About me and my midwifery practice:
What do those letters after your name mean?
I am a CPM or Certified Professional Midwife. This is a credential created by midwives to document that each midwife possesses the skills and knowledge needed to safely practice. The North American Registry of Midwives (NARM) administers the evaluation process and tests. A midwife may become certified through many routes of education, including apprenticeship. LM means Licensed Midwife. The state of Vermont licenses and oversees its homebirth midwives. I am also an Herbalist who offers health consultations and herbal medicine classes, personal healing retreats, grows herbs and makes remedies.
How did you learn to be a midwife?
Most of my knowledge and understanding of birth has been learned from Nature, mothers and babies and other midwives. I have apprenticed, studied independently and attended workshops, conferences and study groups to learn my craft. I continue to study and observe in order to deepen my understanding and gain in skill. The truths I have gathered guide my practice.
I have been a homebirth midwife since November 1990.
What is your approach to birth?
I believe that birth is a natural process that unfolds in its own way and timing. Mothers know how to give birth and babies know how to be born. There are many normal variations and each mother and baby will experience the process in their own unique way. I try not to interfere.
I consider it a privilege to be with you during this very powerful, intimate and transforming time in your lives.
What is the midwife’s role?
As a midwife, I assist you by sharing my experience and knowledge, identifying interferences to the process and offering support, education and referral when needed. I see my relationship with the parents as a partnership. Together, we work to create an environment conducive to natural birthing. I am your guide on this challenging and miraculous journey.
After the baby is born, I am available to help with breastfeeding, baby care, the mother’s physical recovery and emotional adjustments. I consider this postpartum time to be special, your honeymoon with your baby. It deserves the same kind of support as the prenatal and birth time.
