Dear Conference Registrant,

We have a few updates to tell you about.

Instead of the Open Space Discussions on Friday evening, we will be having Didi Pershouse, acupuncturist and homeopathy practitioner, speaking on Sustainable Medicine and her experience in Cuba. Contact hours should be available.

On Sunday in the TBA slot we have Carol Leonard speaking on Self-Publishing for Midwives.

There will be no IV Skills workshop. Anyone who has already registered will get a refund at the conference. The Skills Practice is happening.

Other Friday workshops:
Please register ahead of time.

  • American Heart Association CPR recertification is available for $50. Friday 1-3pm. Jade Kaplan, CNM is the instructor and the certification is good for 2 years.
  • Possible Acupressure class 9-11 am
  • Chinese Medicine and Childbirth with Chris Kiely. 9am-12pm. $40. We need a minimum of 6 participants for it to run.

The very careful practice of “cultivating the source” lies at the very heart of all branches of Chinese Medicine. In this sense, the harmonizing of the reproductive cycles and the nurturing of the womb have always played a primary role in the maintenance of overall health, for both the individual and society. This class aims to give a brief theoretical overview of this concept as it relates specifically to the process of childbirth. We will discuss the application of both herbal and acupressure techniques for the many disharmonies that can arise during childbirth, and will as well discuss some of the more commonly overlooked preventive practices of “source cultivation” in the context of the amazing natural process called birth. There will be time for hands-on practice.

Christopher Kiely, LAc., first began to “cultivate the source” in the Chinese way with Tai Chi Chuan when he was 14 years old. After many years of independent study and travel in the traditional manner of wandering and seeking, he eventually found himself enrolled in Chinese Medicine school in the mid-1990s. During this same time his two children were gracefully born at home, in the water, with both labors being mildly stimulated by acupuncture, giving him an early window into the birthing world, which he has gladly maintained ever since. For the past 10 years, he has been in private practice as both a teacher of Tai Chi Chuan and a practitioner of Chinese Medicine in Bristol, Vermont, and has had the good fortune of being able to assist dozens of women with their pregnancies, both in terms of getting pregnant in the first place and birthing the baby without the use of medicine.
  • Suturing practice facilitated by Adrienne Trahnstrom 1-3pm. Get some practice under an experienced midwife's guidance. It will be low-key. Materials will be provided and some instruction if you would like. It is not meant to be a formal suturing workshop, but just a drop-in "practice" and learning opportunity, with suggested donation of $10, which will cover materials (beef hearts, gloves, sutures, etc.) If you have expired sutures, lidocaine, etc. or syringes, gloves and instruments please bring them.

Additional special offerings at the conference are below. Please sign up in advance if you would like to do them so we have an idea how many are interested.

Tea Leaf Readings on Friday from 4-6pm with Holly Lukens. There will be 2 groups of 6. There is a possibility of more if enough people want readings.  Each member of the groups contributes up to $20.00 for their readings.  Holly's tea leaf reading abilities have been handed down through the women in her family.  She is very accurate.

Chair Massage on Friday 4-6 pm and Sat. 7-9pm with Libby Garofalo. 20 minute massage for $20. Sign up ahead of time appreciated but walk-ins welcome too.
